OVER THE WEEKEND, thousands of cinemagoers headed to the cinema to see The Martian, the new space epic starring Matt Damon.
Haven’t seen it? This is the premise.
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
Sound implausible? Unlikely?
Well, we regret to inform you that a distressing number of people who have seen The Martian think that it’s based on a true story.
Seriously.
University graduates are under the impression that a man went to Mars.
Did you believe that Gravity was based on a true story as well?
*throws hands up in the air*
This is why we can’t have nice things.
We give up.
