Steven Spielberg’s new movie is getting its European premiere in Dublin thanks to Daniel Day Lewis’s affinity for a Wicklow hospice.

DUBLIN GOT its own little taste of Hollywood today when one of the biggest films of the season had its European premiere on O’Connell Street.

‘Lincoln’, Steven Spielberg’s biography of the former US president Abraham Lincoln’s troubles amid the US Civil War, was given its first airing outside of the United States at the Savoy cinema.

The event was held in Dublin after actor Daniel Day Lewis – who is tipped for an Oscar for his performance in the title role – agreed to premiere his next film in Ireland to raise funds for a hospice in his adopted home of Wicklow.

Day-Lewis is the patron of Wicklow Hospice Foundation, and has already agreed to auction props from the film to raise funds for it.

Among those in attendence were President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina, U2 singer Bono, and Olympic boxing champion Katie Taylor and her parents – invited as special guests of Day-Lewis.
