ONE OF THE most memorable moments during this year’s Wimbledon final was the sad sight of Marin Cilic in tears thanks to an unfortunate blister on his foot.
He played through and eventually, inevitably, lost to the irrepressible Roger Federer.
Professional contrarian and opinion-haver Piers Morgan was watching and became incensed that Cilic had the temerity to show emotion and frustration on court
He was, naturally, called out for being a “dick” but said that Cilic needed to “man up”
*thinking face*
His rant continued on Twitter all afternoon, saying Cilic “choked” – despite the visual evidence that he was suffering through painful-looking blisters for the whole match
The crying seemed to be the biggest issue for Piers
So far, standard issue stuff really.
But it was when someone asked tennis legend Martina Navratilova what she thought of Piers’s opinion, it went to the next level of farcical
Martina didn’t hold back on Morgan’s comments – calling it #sexistbs
And then yesterday tried to give an explanation about why Cilic was upset
To which Morgan replied
This line specifically was almost beyond parody:
Champions play through blisters…
A man who has never played sport professionally or won any major sporting honours explaining to someone who has won 167 single titles, including 18 slams, what it means to be a champion didn’t really go down well.
Especially given the fact that Cilic’s tears could have been down to many factors – like not being able to play his best on one of the biggest days of his career thanks to an injury.
It’s the dictionary definition of mansplaining
Of all the Piers Morgan arguments on Twitter that are so embarrassingly easy to dismiss, this takes the lead
Martina ended the discussion this morning with her final, classy comment on what it means to be a champion
And Piers had to get the final word in, despite having lost the argument
Right, Piers.
