Police search for tip-off Twitter user
POLICE IN SOUTH AFRICA are searching for the person behind the ‘PigSpotter’ Twitter account.
The user has been alerting their followers to the locations of speed traps and roadblocks around Johannesburg.
The user’s bio reads: “Let’s help each other expose where cops are hiding and trapping daily.”
The account has been temporarily, but voluntarily, put on hold because the user says their Blackberry needs to be repaired. PigSpotter, who has over 14,000 followers, said the posts would continue when the phone has been fixed.
Warning tweets posted yesterday read:
But police haven’t been impressed with the messages. AP reports a police spokesperson saying: “He is not just insulting the metro police. He is insulting all officers in uniform. These are people who have got families, and he is using vulgar language.”
The person behind the PigSpotter account said they would still help speeding drivers to evade the police, but would stop warning people about roadblocks as a goodwill gesture.
