It’s way more expensive to buy prosecco in Ireland compared to Scotland.

This Facebook post comparing the differences between Irish and Scottish prices of Bella Cucina prosecco is causing outrage on the Tesco Ireland Facebook.

The photo shows Lisa Kiernan’s experience with the price of a bottle in Scotland £5.50, (which is approximately just over €7) with Irish prices of €17.99. Laura, living in Scotland but originally from Kildare, said she doesn’t think it’s ‘fair’ to have such a price contrast.

Tesco themselves addressed the situation, saying it’s all down to promotions and government levies:

It is never our intention to mislead our customers. We have different promotional cycles to UK stores and we have a local wine buying team based in Dublin who regularly review our range and offers.
While this particular prosecco brand is not currently on promotion here, another popular brand, Amanti Prosecco is currently priced at €8.
Government levies on certain products such as sparkling wine and champagne are also higher in Ireland which impacts on prices.

Sure enough, you can get Amanti for €7.99. The brunch is not over yet.
