7 light (but waterproof) jackets for when the weather just cannot be trusted

And yep, they’ll suit your wardrobe.

OUR RELUCTANCE TO splash out on hooded jackets and raincoats is a running joke among Irish women.

Oh, we might buy a Mac in a Sac for a festival (if we can’t unearth the poncho from last year’s Body & Soul, that is), but when it comes to fending off the elements on a daily basis, frankly we’re ill-equipped, ladies.

Many of us opt for our winter coat when we see it’s raining despite the fact it’s much too heavy for the temperature or brave the rain with a light jacket and a €4 brolly from Penneys.

And here’s the thing with the elements; they’re pretty damn changeable in Ireland, transitioning from wet to warm to mild and back to wet in the space of a lunch-time.

In other words; the weather cannot be trusted right now.

So it’s really worth investing in a coat that’s relatively light, hooded and waterproof before we really reach the depths of winter and have to bring out the big guns.

Here are our top picks from the highstreet.

1. Light pink waterproof hooded rain mac €80.00

Also comes in black and yellow, people.

2. ASOS Design borg lined raincoat €76.04

This comes in a variety of colours and is available in a ‘Tall’ version for anyone 5’9″ or over.

3. BLFD Solid Fisherman Rain Parka €76.04

Yes, the colour won us over.

4. Water Repellent Rubberised Parka €49.95

The colour will go with everything, let’s be fair.

5. Textured Puffer Raincoat €79.95

So this one will be warmer than your standard rain jacket as it has a contrasting, detachable quilted interior. And word to the wise; you definitely don’t need that hat.

6. Rains Long Waterproof Jacket €123.04

This is easily one of our favourites.

7. Long Blue Waterproof Coat €95.00

According to the website, the line that brought you this design was established in Denmark and has been ‘challenging the elements since 2012′. Sure, what more could you want?
