THE EUROVISION IS just days away (gird your loins) and last night, the Late Late looked back on Ireland’s history in the contest.
To the delight of the viewers at home, Paul Harrington was on hand to lead a singalong of his and Charlie McGettigan’s winning song, Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids.
Even if you were knee high to a grasshopper when Harrington and McGettigan stormed to victory in 1994, listening to the song probably conjures up some serious feelings for you. (If not, you’re made of stone.)
“I remember ’62…”
Ahhh. Isn’t this still a TUNE in fairness?
“I was 16 and so were you…”
1994 was 23 years ago. Riverdance! Is! 23! *gulps*
“And we never knew what life held in store…”
You just don’t, do you? I understand that now that I am wise and old. Thank you Paul and Charlie.
“We were the rock ‘n’ roll kids…”
*crows along with absolutely no regard for pitch or volume* I don’t care if I’m murdering it. You just have to sing along. You HAVE to.
“Rock ‘n’ roll was all we did…”
Remember when we just won every Eurovision and they practically set up camp in the Point Theatre? Our golden years!
“Now Johnny’s in love with the girl next door…”
They don’t make them like this any more. Just two men with a guitar and a piano, no bells and whistles, the absolute STATE of the Eurovision these days. Don’t get me started… *gets started*
“How I wish we could find those rock ‘n’ roll days again…”
You’re telling me, lads.
“I was yours and you were mine, but that was once upon a time…”
*clutches the arm of the person closest to them*
“…Now we never seem to rock and roll, we just never seem to rock and roll anymore.”
No, I’m fine. It’s just a lovely song about how life is fleeting and things get lost along the way. Lovely. *chokes on lump in throat*
