Forget Netflix, here's 13 shows you should get stuck into on the new RTE Player
THE RTE PLAYER recently relaunched in Beta and it’s looking well, indeed. Perhaps the best thing about it, is that it actually works now!
Along with the new look, RTE have also launched some player-exclusive shows and brought back some oldies. Here are a few to catch up on if you’re sick of flicking through Netflix.
1. Brian and Pippa Get Married, Reality Bites
RTE RTE
SORRY can we take a minute for the two? Brian Ormond and Pippa O’Connor met in Krystle back in peak Celtic Tiger times. In 2011, they made a mini doc for RTE about their wedding plans, and it’s worth watching to see how far she’s come. There isn’t a Pocco in sight.
2. The Doireann Project
RTE RTE
If you like people impersonating people with easy jokes, but have had enough of the Mario and Oliver saturation, this could be for you. Doireann impersonates the likes of So Sue Me, Pippa O’Connor, Daithi O Se, and also makes up her own characters.
3. Dawson’s Creek
No, your eyes aren’t deceving you. The whole six seasons of Dawson’s Creek are on RTE Player. If you haven’t already watched the entire series of the teen drama where Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, and Joshua Jackson got their start, get on it now.
4. Your One Nikita
RTE RTE
This is a new animation series from illustrator Aoife Dooley. You might know her from her book series How to Be Massive or her Dublin Hun social media accounts. Nikita and her mates live in Dublin’s Northside, and some of their antics might hit home.
5. Bachelor’s Walk
RTE Player RTE Player
If you remember Bachelor’s Walk you probably shouldn’t watch any of the suggestions so far. Think of it as Sex and the City, but instead of four women in New York, it’s three lads in Dublin. There’s also no glamour and minimal good sex. The whole box set is on the player now.
6. The Rubber Bandits Guides
RTE RTE
Since Blind Boy got his podcast going we haven’t seen as much of the lads on television as we’d like. Take a trip back down memory lane with their five guides to topics such as 1916, money, sex, and the internet. For many, it was the first time they actually stood up and took notice of what the plasticbag-heads had to say.
7. Fade Street
RTE RTE
Must we tell you to go watch this gem of an attempt of a reality show set in Dublin? Do it, now.
8. On Home Ground
RTE Player RTE Player
If you want to watch the series that broke Amy Huberman’s acting career, now you can. On Home Ground is a drama set in a GAA club in a small Irish town. The team have high hopes in winning the championship for the first time, so basically it’s like a smalltown Irish Friday Night Lights. Sorta.
9. Capsule
RTE RTE
A bunch of Irish influencers describe how they create their ideal capsule wardrobe. I wasn’t immediately sold on this, but if you enjoy watching long, meandering, pointless Instagram stories from fashion bloggers, you’ll prob like this. That’s not a dig.
10. We Run the World
RTE Player RTE Player
This is an RTE Player original, because you can hardly imagine airing a documentary about five Irish female athletes on television, can you? Follow great women such as Nicci Daly from the Irish Women’s Hockey team, Limerick camogie player Sarah Carey, and Phil Healy, the 100 and 200 metre Irish record holder. Inspiring.
11. The Couch, with Yvonne Tiernan
RTE Player RTE Player
Did you enjoy Tommy Tiernan’s spontaneous chat show? Well, you’ll love his wife Yvonne’s effort from 2015. Yvonne interviews some great women such as Sharon Horgan, Maia Dunphy, and Jo Malone.
12. Jen’s Weekend
RTE RTE
Tv and radio host Jennifer Zamparelli does a sort of mini Livin With Lucy in these six bitesized episodes. She joins the likes of Joel Dommett, Eyal from Love Island, and Toff for some activities of their choice.
13. Love/Hate
RTE RTE
Of course, enough time has passed to watch this drama all over again. Every single episode is on the player now.
