RUBY ROSE HAS been chosen to play Batwoman and in the process is making TV history.
It’s the first time that a TV series will feature a lesbian superhero in a lead role.
The Orange Is The New Black actress announced the news last night via her Instagram.
In the post, she said:
The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.
It’s planned that Batwoman will appear first in a crossover event in December in Arrow-verse and if it goes well, there will be an original stand-alone TV series.
There was a mixed reaction to the news of the casting – some thought it was an excellent casting…
Ruby Rose is a perfect Batwoman in the sense that it's entirely possible she's been Batwoman this entire time.

Ruby's androgyny reminds me of Bowie. There's an energy to this casting.
Some people were learning some facts.
Before today I knew virtually nothing about Batwoman. Twitter has taught me that she's gay, Jewish, and @RubyRose. Sounds good to me.

However there was a substantial portion who weren’t that delighted by the news:
If I’m honest, Ruby Rose has never really done it for me. And I feel like the CW had a great opportunity to cast a lesbian unknown and have us fall in love with her as opposed to casting someone at least some of queer female community is not crazy about..

The CW when they realize actual lesbians don’t like Ruby Rose. pic.twitter.com/22gJizdwYc

Some felt that it wasn’t relevant if the actress was a lesbian, but if the writers of the characters were:
piping hot tea: they shouldve casted women regardless of sexuality. its not like the actress is gonna have input over the storylines. it's way more important to have lesbians in the writers room than it is for the actress to be gay too. now we get ruby rose
