After a nine-year marriage and a subsequent six-year separation, the Oscar winner and the singer/songwriter are making it official by signing the divorce papers.

And in a move which has thrilled fans of the actor, Russell marked it by holding an auction called The Art of Divorce in Sydney yesterday.

The auction featured 227 lots – many of which included memorabilia from the actor’s movies – and one person went hell for leather and splashed more than $7,000 on the 54-year-old’s jockstrap.

Now, make no mistake about it, that item was a stellar example of leather and suede craftmanship, but… well… Christ Almighty.

Oh, and this final figure was more than ten times the original asking price.

According to reports, the item, which was featured in his 2005 film Cinderella Man, was one of the most popular items of the entire auction.

And in case the jockstrap wasn’t enough, the item was accompanied by a letter from the man himself, stating his ownership.

Gorge.

Sotheby’s has confirmed that the item sold at $7,000 Hammer Price, but the lucky winner ultimately forked over $8,450 (approx €5,330) with Buyer’s Premium.

Russell celebrated the auction’s success on Twitter yesterday, telling fans and followers that he raised approximately $4,000,000.
