OH, HOW FAR she’s come. From RTÉ to Hollywood, Ruth Negga is quickly becoming Ireland’s rising star.
Remember her as Rosie in Love/Hate?
Of course you do. She was Darren’s love interest in the first two seasons of the show, before she left him due to his increasing involvement Dublin’s gangland.
Well, the Ethiopia-born actress (who was raised by her Irish mother in Limerick) has just landed her first cover of a major Hollywood magazine, the Hollywood Reporter.
It’s all thanks to her upcoming movie alongside Joel Edgerton, which is already creating an Oscar buzz.
Loving is based on the true story of Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving, a married interracial couple in the 1950s who have to battle for their right to marry.
Ruth has long been tipped for an Oscar for the role, with the film due for release here in Ireland in February.
Speaking to Vogue, Ruth said she identified with her character as an Irish citizen.
Virginia isn’t that different from Ireland. Land and home and community are super important. When I was playing her, I tried to imagine I couldn’t go home again because of whom I married. It must have drained the lifeblood from her.
Negga also appeared alongside Cillian Murphy in Breakfast on Pluto and portrayed Shirley Bassey in the BBC production about the singer’s life.
Negga got her first taste of Academy life when she appeared in 12-years a Slave, which won an Oscar for Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Fingers crossed it’ll be Ruth’s year.
