THERE ARE CERTAIN songs which will always – always – make me cry.
It doesn’t matter whether I’m singing them, you’re singing them, or the original composer is singing them, when a song gets me, it gets me for life.
It tends to be the melody and lyrics rather than the voice that affects me the most, and I know this because I once found myself choking up while delivering an appalling performance of Travelling Soldier by the Dixie Chicks at a family gathering.
As I have a singing voice akin to that of a dying cat and do not possess the ability to carry a tune, it certainly wasn’t the performance that moved me, but the story within the song.
Sidenote: I wasn’t encouraged to compose myself and carry on after breaking down which says enough in itself.
With this in mind, we asked you guys to share the songs that make you cry without fail, and it’s a long and lengthy one.
Snow Patrol: Chasing Cars
Yep. Still to this day!
Dixie Chicks: You Were Mine
I ended up listening to it last night and crying myself to sleep for no good reason. It felt strangely good.
You’ll Never Walk Alone
It’s probably the only one that brings a tear to my eye, to be honest. I wouldn’t be a big crier.
Elton John: Circle of Life
Yes, I cry at the beginning of The Lion King.
Con Te Partiro
When sung by Andrea Bocelli. Thanks to my mam for playing it loads when I was a moody teenager.
LCD Soundsystem: Oh Baby
We were actually listening to it a lot around the time our child was born. I’m emotional just writing this!
Girls Aloud: Untouchable
I have no idea why but I always cry at the line ‘like beautiful robots dancing alone’!
Madonna: What It Feels Like For a Girl
If I’m feeling dramatic…
Avril Lavigne: When You’re Gone
For some reason, the video gets me every time.
And the other big shout-outs? Here you go…
- Snow Patrol: Run
- Labrinth: Jealous
- The Cinematic Orchestra: To Build a Home
- Interpol: Untitled
- Sara Bareilles: Satellite Call
- Fleetwood Mac: Sara
- Brandi Carlile: The Story
- The Civil Wars: Poison and Wine
- Coldplay: Fix You
- Don McLean: Vincent
- Brian Jonestown Massacre: Anemone
- Des’Ree: Kissing You

But what about you? Have any of the above ever moved you to tears?
