IN A RECENT interview with Refinery 29, Saoirse Ronan discussed the power dynamic at play between the characters in her latest film, Mary Queen of Scots, specifically when it comes to sex and relationships.

“As a queen, though, sex was performed in order to produce an heir,” Saoirse explained, before elaborating on the ways this concept was explored.
Indeed, the 24-year-old actress gave an insight into how one particular scene in the highly-anticipated film acted as an exception to the rule when it came to sexual ‘norms’ in 16th century Scotland.
What was so great about having that moment when Henry – played by Jack Lowden – goes down on her is that it’s purely for her. That’s a sexual revelation purely for her. It’s not to perform her duty, it’s not to give anything back to anyone else or to the state. It’s for her.
“It was so important to see this young girl experience this pleasure, probably for the first time, and have that be a real sort of revelation. It was just another element to her humanity,” Saoirse added.

While the actress has filmed sex scenes in two of her most recent films, Brooklyn and Ladybird, she acknowledged that her scene with Jack was much more intimate than previous experiences on set.
Commenting on the fact that the camera tracked her face the entire time, she said:
I’d never done anything like that before. I’d done sex scenes but they’re so mechanical that they’re kind of easy to do. Whereas when it’s on your face like that. I just kept thinking about – what was it -When Harry Met Sally.

Saoirse, who is said to be dating her co-star Jack, said they attempted to choreograph the scene like a dance, and acknowledged that this type of scene was a first not only for Saoirse, but for Jack as well.
We choreographed the whole thing so it felt like a dance. Jack and I are very comfortable with each other.
“We looked after each other,” she added. “I don’t think he’d ever done anything like that before either. It was new territory for both of us.”
