IN A POIGNANT message posted to Instagram yesterday, Sarah Hyland provided an insight into the isolation felt by the individual in the aftermath of a sexual assault.
The 27-year-old actress explained that she was the victim of an assault, which took place during her time in high school, and was perpetrated by a person she considered a friend.
He was a friend. It was New Year’s Eve my senior ear of high school. Everyone was drunk. He broke into the bathroom I was in.
Offering further insight into her response to the crime, she continued:
I hoped it was a dream but my ripped tights in the morning proved otherwise. I thought no one would believe me.
As criticism intensifies over Brett Kavanaugh’s conduct in the wake of Dr Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony yesterday, some members of the public seem intent on questioning why Dr Ford waited more than three decades to speak out.
Attempting to answer this question from her own experience of assault, the Modern Family actress wrote:
I didn’t want to be called dramatic. After all I didn’t say no. Shock can do that to a person.
The actress concluded her post with the hashtags #believewomen, #metoo and #ibelieveher.
Earlier this week, Cara Delevigne offered her voice to the conversation by explaining why she didn’t come forward in the aftermath of an assault.
Using the hashtag WhyIDidntReport, the 26-year-old said she felt a sense of shame.
Because I felt ashamed of what happened and didn’t want to publicly ruin someone’s life, even though they privately ruined mine #WhyIDidntReport
