Serena Williams explained that she won't celebrate her daughter's birthday for religious reasons

Last year, Serena told Vogue that she’s a Jehovah’s Witness.

WHEN YOU’VE GOT Serena Williams as a parent, every single day must feel like your birthday.

So, it’s likely that little Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr won’t be too fussed about the fact that her mam has no plans for her upcoming birthday on the 1st of September. Never mind the fact that she’s only turning one.

At a press conference during the US Open, the 36-year-old tennis player was asked if she had a party planned for Alexis Jr’s birthday, and Serena explained “Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays. We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, so we don’t do that.”

Although Jehovah’s Witnesses observe weddings, funerals and anniversaries, they refrain from celebrating Christmas, Easter, Halloween and birthdays as these holidays have pagan origins.

Apparently Serena’s husband Alexis has begun to practice his wife’s religion. Last year, while speaking to Vogue, Serena said:

Being a Jehovah’s Witness is important to me, but I’ve never really practiced it and have been wanting to get into it. Alexis didn’t grow up going to any church, but he’s been really receptive and even takes the lead. He puts my needs first.
