9 reasons we need to appreciate Shrek more than we already do
NETFLIX HAS DONE the world yet another great favour by putting all of the Shrek movies on the platform. What did we do to deserve this reward? Who knows but let’s not look a gift donkey in the mouth.
In celebration of the mighty event, let’s examine the reasons why Shrek and Shrek 2 (the other movies don’t exist) are probably some of the best movies ever made.
1. Donkey
If Eddie Murphy never played another role in his life then it would be ok because he gifted us Donkey. Donkey who is somehow all of us be he annoying, needy or hilarious. We are all Donkey.

2. The villians
Both Lord Farquaad and Prince Charming were two equally ridiculous villains. Lord Farquaad was too lazy to seek the Princess and ending up losing her to Shrek while Prince Charming being so into himself that his mother had to do everything for him. I’ve definitely met a few men like him.
3. The soundtracks
Would we love Smash Mouth’s ‘All Star’ as much as we do without Shrek? Do we appreciate the Fairy Godmother putting her heart and soul into ‘Holding Out for a Hero’ at the end of Shrek 2 for no apparent reason as much as we should? The soundtrack to these films was and still is unparalleled.
4. Shrek and Fiona’s relationship
Given Shrek is 17 years old the fact that we have to talk about how not being beautiful means you still deserve love is a bit sad but hey it’s the world we live in. Fiona was the first badass princess who I remember who was able to speak for herself and Shrek unlike Lord Farquaad respects that. It’s just a very nice relationship plus nobody can fling a mermaid quite like Fiona.
5. Dragon and Donkey’s relationship
Speaking of different relationships let us take a moment to appreciate Dragon and Donkey who are the unsung romantic couple in this franchise. Do we want to know how they created their fire breathing donkey children? Not really. Are we happy for them? Absolutely. Love is for everyone.
6. Shrek and Donkey’s friendship
We all know that Donkey annoys the shit out of Shrek and they’re pretty much like siblings but they do really love each other. As Shrek would say, their relationship is like an onion, it has many layers.
7. The Fairy Godmother
Yes she was a villain but my god she was a STUNNING villain. She stress eats, she’s constantly fixing all the problems the men in her life cause her and she’s constantly frazzled. She’s not the hero we deserve but by god she’s fabulous.
8. Puss In Boots
Look the casting in this franchise was absolute genius. Antonio Banderas as Puss In Boots was an absolute genius move. If he’s not trying to seduce someone then he’s looking for a scrap. Also look at those eyes.
9. Shrek’s entire squad
There are so many good people in Shrek’s squad like Pinocchio, the 3 Little Pigs and the Gingerbread Man. Never forget the Giant Gingerbread Mungo literally destroying a castle to the tune of ‘I Need A Hero’. Truly the best friends that you could ask for.
