Hundreds of historical items going under the hammer today included Constance Markievicz’s handgun.

HUNDREDS OF ITEMS and documents relating to the establishment of an independent Ireland have gone under the hammer at a special auction organised jointly by Adam’s and Mealy’s.

The documents being auctioned today include various contemporary newspaper reports of the events of the War of Independence and a range of medals presented for fighting in different campaigns for independence.

Meanwhile, a range of First World War recruitment posters shows the conflicting push for Irishmen to enlist overseas and engage in a different battle.

A small handgun used by Countess Constance Markievicz is listed in the auction catalogue, along with one of her target cards – bearing two holes in the bulls-eye section.
