A HAIR SALON in Dublin is making headlines after its owner announced she would provide a free blow dry to any woman who can confirm she availed of her free cervical check.
Using the tragic passing of Jade Goody as a platform to reinforce the importance of cervical checks, Gillian Lee of Mane Envy Hair in Baldoyle wrote on Facebook: “Its awful for me to say but ‘The Jade Goody Effect’ has worn off.”
Paying tribute to her daughter’s gesture, Gillian’s mother, Miriam, confirmed she had received abnormal smear results six years ago, writing: “Cervical Check saved my life back in 2012! Everyone should avail of this service. It’s free, it’s quick and it’s a life saver.”
According to the salon’s Facebook page, the incentive piqued the attention of the Irish Cancer Society, who communicated Gillian’s endeavour to The Coombe Hospital and Trinity College.
Reaching out to Gillian and her mother, Professor Cara Martin invited the women to participate in a workshop which is being held in conjunction with European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.
“We have some experts from CervicalCheck and a gynaecologist as well as young women who have their own stories to tell,” Professor Martin explained in a post which has been shared on the salon’s Facebook page.
Recent figures released by UK-based Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust revealed that a staggering 35 per cent of women have avoided routine smear checks, citing embarrassment and body odour as the two overriding factors.
In order to avail of Mane Envy Hair’s offer, women must provide confirmation of their appointment in the form of a doctor’s note, email or text.
