Smoking baby finally kicks the habit

Indonesia’s chain-smoking tot finally breaks his 40-a-day cycle.

TWO-YEAR-OLD ARDI RIZAL has finally quit smoking 40 cigarettes day after attending a specialist clinic, according to the Jakarta Globe.

His parents said he started smoking at just eleven months old, when they would visit their local fish market.

Thinking he was playing to pass the time while they were at the market, one day they discovered him smoking and hanging out at a cigarette stall.

A video showing the baby chain-smoking went viral, making Ardi a worldwide sensation:

Matthew Myers, the president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, told CBS News that child smoking was a serious problem in Indonesia.

Indonesia’s cigarette regulations are notoriously lax. More than 30% of children there smoke a cigarette before the age of 10.

Ardi Rizal had shown signs of severe addiction, throwing major tantrums when he wanted a cigarette. His 30-day recovery programme included sessions with a psychologist, who transferred his interest from cigarettes, to playing with toys.

His parents say they’re pleased he has given up smoking, but are worried that he’ll manage to stay off them.
