A look back at some of the first Instagram posts from TDs

How are our elected representatives managing Instagram?

POLITICIANS ARE ALWAYS trying to find a way to be relevant and gain lots of new voters. With turnout in the referendum for young women aged between 18-24 up 94%, perhaps politicians are going to expand their Instagram game a bit more to win votes.

But how did some of them start off on Instagram? And if you’re wondering why I’m focusing on Fine Gael, I’m not actually a blueshirt but a lot of politicians just don’t have Instagram. Don’t judge me.

Leo Varadkar – Taoiseach

Our Taoiseach’s first Instagram was typically boring as he was meeting his Estonian counterpart as they took over presidency of the EU. However, he didn’t disappoint later when he posted a lovely picture of an orange tree on the way to a meeting. Loves a good orange does our fitness fanatic leader.

Richard Bruton – Minister for Education

There is absolutely no question that Richard Bruton has the best Instagram of any TD. His first post was him looking DELIGHTED playing the drums while Mary Mitchell O’Connor looked like she’d rather be ANYWHERE else. He’s a big fan of cooking too and makes his own jam. Very wholesome indeed.

Simon Harris – Minister for Health

Our favourite Minister for Health’s first Instagram post was just his poster pose but he has since upped his game dramatically. He’s started including his rescue dog Poppy in posts but he will have to learn how to take a selfie at some stage.

Simon Coveney – Minister for Foreign Affairs

Simon Coveney’s Instgram has been dormant for a while now but as a typical politician would, he was out canvassing for his first post. Never change Simon.

Katherine Zappone – Minister for Children & Youth Affairs

Like Coveney, Katherine Zappone’s account has also been dormant but her first post was a nice picture with Dil Wickremasinghe during the Marriage Equality campaign. Katherine clearly has a decent sense of humour with a devilish encounter with the bins while out canvassing in 2016 for the election.

Josepha Madigan – Minister for Culture, Heritage & The Gaeltacht

Josepha Madigan LOVES Instagram and is constantly posting on it. One of her first posts was a Facebook app trying to assess her age. Hopefully it didn’t steal too much of her data. It seems Josepha also likes a good meme too. More politicians using Kermit the Frog in their social media please.

Mary Mitchell O’Connor – Minister for Higher Education

Mary’s first Instagram like Simon Harris’ was just a nice photo of her introducing herself to the Gram world. However, this photo from 2017 also deserves a shout out. She tagged it #StabbedInTheBack and the fact of said stabber is rather entertaining. What a photo op.

Michael Creed – Minister for Agriculture

Michael Creed likes the odd Instagram and as a Minster for Agriculture, there should be as many animals as possible in his posts. Here’s an early post of him at a donkey sanctuary. Adorbz.

Enda Kenny – Former Taoiseach

Enda Kenny’s Instagram has been dormant since he left office but we do feel that his very first post when he was still Taoiseach deserves a shout out. Look at how thoughtful he appears to be. A lot of work went into this, fair play.
