LAST NIGHT, RTÉ broadcast a documentary filmed entirely on an iPhone.
The Collectors was directed by Eleanor Mannion, and followed a group of Irish people who love collecting things.
Lillian from Cork was into Coke. Coca Cola, that is. She began collecting things in 1984 when she took a can of Coke from Germany to Austria, and decided to keep it. She now collects bottles in every country she visits, as well as all the memorabilia she can get her hands on.
Martin from Cavan is into model vehicles (22,000 to be specific), Robert has a collection of 10,000 comics, while Jessica from Kildare had a Lego collection that would impress the best of them.
She makes AMAZING scenes
Glenda from Sligo is the proud owner of Ireland’s biggest Barbie collection, and even plans on having a Barbie bridal party at her upcoming wedding.
It was Helena from Meath that really challenged people’s perceptions
Her big doll collection initially freaked people out a little
Helena explained that she collects porcelain dolls because she doesn’t go out socialising that much, and has kept up the hobby for 20 years.
She pretty much broke our hearts
They’re so colourful when you see so many of them together. They remind me of my own children when they were small.
She went on to add that one of her favourite in her collection was the first doll her daughter Annemarie ever owned. Annemarie died of leukaemia at 20, and the doll wears one of her childhood dresses.
It’s something I can focus on when I have a dull moment. I cannot bring back what happened, so you have to keep looking forward and not looking back.
