Armie Hammer's story on Graham Norton made everyone feel better about their festive fails

‘I made the mistake of believing her.’

MOST OF US have a story about a particular Christmas fail, and many of them revolve specifically around the act of gift-giving.

And sure listen, Armie Hammer is no different.

While appearing on The Graham Norton Show last night, the Call Me By Your Name actor revealed that on one particular Christmas he didn’t buy his wife a present.

And the fact that it was their first festive season as a married couple? Not ideal.

Recalling the situation in painful detail, Armie said:

We go back to her family’s place in Colorado. We’re going to spend Christmas there with them and leading up to it, I said to my wife ‘Well, what do you want for Christmas?’

“She said ‘nothing, nothing, nothing.’ I said ‘No, no, but really, what do you want for Christmas?’ She said nothing.”

“And I made the mistake of believing her,” he admitted.

Cue shocked laughter from fellow guests, the studio audience and damn near anyone at home who has sidestepped that potential pitfall in the past.

“Good noise everyone,” Graham noted. “That’s 600 people going ‘you idiot’.”

Undeterred, Armie surged on:

So then Christmas morning; everyone’s opening presents. We’re giving presents to the kids, for her parents, her siblings, significant others, everyone gets presents, and all of a sudden I see my wife looking around, noticing that there’s really nothing for her.

He then recalls his wife’s quizzical look, their almost wordless exchange, and that’s a wrap on the presents, kids.

Or so Armie thought.

Then we went downstairs, and she just started crying! She was like ‘This is our first Christmas as a married couple! With my parents! What is wrong with you?!’

“You told me nothing!” he replied to which she shrieked: “And you believed me?!”
