10 memories of The Old Bar all DCU heads will recognise

Good times.

THE SAD NEWS came through today that The Old Bar in DCU is set to finally close its fabled doors for good.

But even though it will soon be gone, it certainly won’t be forgotten. Because:

1. The key to The Old Bar’s charm was the delightfully eclectic furniture that looked like it had been taken from your granny’s gaff

*perfection*

2. The the pool tables outside were exclusively for lounging on and drinking off

If you really wanted to play pool on them you had to get there seriously early and hope for the best. Before the plywood went over them.

3. Toxic Tuesday was the holy grail of The Old Bar – and surely when it was at its best

Those drink offers. The only time you thought Southern Comfort and undiluted Lime MiWadi was a great idea.

4. In fact, the Tuesday timeline of Larkfield > Toxic Tuesday > more drinks in Larkfield was *the* DCU rite of passage

Complete with trying to sneak people in past security afters hours (and good luck with that).

5. You’ve more than likley gone for pints in there when there was literally nobody else to be seen

Tumbleweed territory.

6. But when it got rocking the dancefloor had a ridiculous buzz to it

Mostly propelled along by the Fratellis – or whatever band was popular at the time.

7. At least 90% of the DCU population of the mid-00′s saw Fight Like Apes play The Old Bar at least once

They practically lived there.

8. The roster list of ‘celeb’ guests that graced The Old Bar down the years needed to be seen to be believed

Nobody who witnessed it will ever forget Mickey Joe Harte’s DJ set comprising of a Green Day CD on repeat for an hour. Sure what else would you want?

9. No matter how packed the NuBar would get, or how good the session – it never had the gritty charm of The Old Bar

They did have decent chicken goujons, in fairness.

10. And finally… The Old Bar was constantly being closed and then reopened in an attempt to rejuvenate interest – and its fate accounted for most of the campus goss on a daily basis

“Did you hear The Old Bar is coming back?”

“This time it will be different. They’ll be serving €3 Fosters… all week!”

Now it’s finally been closed for good, and it will be missed.
