The Onion absolutely skewered Ireland's strict abortion laws in a piece yesterday

We’re making The Onion for all the wrong reasons.

THE ONION IS arguably the world’s leading satire publication, poking fun at everything from White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer to annoying co-workers.

Yesterday the website set its sights towards Ireland and published a mock vox pop entitled Irish Teen Who Sought Abortion Put In Mental Hospital.

An Irish teen was forcibly committed after seeking an abortion, only to be released four days later upon determining she did not have a psychological disorder. What do you think?

This question was followed by three mocked up answers including one which bore a striking resemblance to Ireland’s existing abortion policy.

Abortion needs to be safe, legal, rare, and encumbered by countless layers of bureaucratic meddling.

The piece was of course referencing horrifying reports that a teenage girl seeking an abortion was detained under the Mental Health Act at the end of last year before being discharged after a court heard that she “did not suffer from an acute mental health disorder that warranted her detention under the Mental Health Act 2001″.

The news made international headlines with the likes of CNN, IndependentElle, Jezebel, Glamour and Broadly all picking up on the story. And now The Onion is skewering us.

Earlier this week, Minister for Health Simon Harris stated that he wished to see a referendum on the Eighth Amendment take place next summer

Make it happen, guys. The world is looking at us.
