A modern family, conjoined twins and "incredible staff" - viewers watched The Rotunda in awe last night

Tissues at the ready, folks.

EPISODE THREE OF The Rotunda aired last night – a documentary centering on Ireland’s oldest maternity hospital.

In a truly rollercoaster episode, The Rotunda covered co-parenting and a very special case of twins.

Midwives Mikey and Rhona were featured having their own baby, which they planned on co-parenting with Mikey’s husband Conleth. Eh, three parents to have wrapped around your little finger? Ideal.

Mikey said: “When the news came out about the baby before Christmas, the reception was amazing. They’ve minded us so well, we are like little VIPs going through.”

In the episode Mikey, Conleth and Rhona discussed their decision to co-parent together. They were trying for about a year, and were about to go abroad for fertility treatment, when Rhona finally became pregnant.

Rhona said:

I have no doubt that there’s going to be people who will have certain opinions on our situation but for me the people that matter know about our situation, the people that matter understand our situation and the people that matter to the three of us are very happy with the situation. For me that’s all that matters.”

Mikey added: “There is three of us to one baby, that ratio sounds great. We are that modern family now, that is the way I look on it and where there is love and respect you can do anything.”

Six hands are better than two when it comes to shitey nappies. That’s just simple maths! As obstetrician Sharon Cooley said: “You can’t have enough love.”

It’s safe to say social media was enamoured with them.

Cuties.

Elsewhere, people marvelled as the Rotunda staff assisted in the delivery of conjoined twins.

At one point, the pair looked to be “holding hands”. Staff were praised for dealing with the incredibly devastating situation.

Can we get a shoutout for the midwives again?

As always, The Rotunda are on hand to support anyone affected by the programme.

The Rotunda continues on RTE2 every Thursday at 9.30pm for the next four weeks.
