GROWING UP BESIDE your best friend was the holy grail.
1. You tried to communicate with these at some stage
Just stretch it across the garden and you’re good to go. You had to sit in the hall, but what matter?
2. And then these

3. You’d actually knock into them if you wanted them to come out and play
4. But you could see if they were home by looking for the car
No car in the driveway, go back to watching TV.
[Thirty minutes later]
There’s the car.
DING DONG.
5. Your parents were pals too
Making plans to play, a LOT easier.
6. Sometimes, you could get their attention by just calling out the window
I CAN’T COME OUT UNTIL SIX BUT SEE YOU AT THE GREEN THEN.
7. You never once waked into their garden, you’d simply hop over fence
- your mam.
8. Summer days were spent on the big green having water fights and cycling bikes
Getting called in before they did was the WORST, though.
9. You used to walk school together
If you were lucky enough to go to the same school, or at least the one beside each other.
The two best friiiiends.
10. Sometimes you’d even get your dinner there
There was definitely some manky cabbage in the equation, though.
