LOTS OF COUPLES might feel pressure to get married – but not many have thousands of people sign a petition calling for them to tie the knot.
That’s the situation faced by long-time Sesame Street roommates Bert and Ernie after their home city of New York legalised gay marriage last month. The pair have lived together in a basement apartment at 123 Sesame Street, sharing a bedroom, since the show’s inception in 1969 – leading to long-running speculation that their relationship was romantic – but have never acknowledged anything more than a close friendship.
The petition, which has been signed by more than 4,000 people calls for the show’s creators “to allow Bert and Ernie to marry”. One commenter on the campaign’s Facebook page wrote “I think that two people [or puppets] who have lived together for over 40 years should get married if they want to”, with another adding: “I always wanted those two to tie the knot, their sexual tension is irresistible”.
The petition adds that a marriage on kids’ TV would “teach tolerance of those that are different”. However, critics of the idea have posted angry comments. One wrote: “there is nothing gay about bert & ernie, there just two guys who share a room & enjoy each others company, it’s called friendship!!”
