Billionaire announces construction of Titanic II
JUST WEEKS AFTER the 100th anniversary of the demise of the most famous cruise ship in the world, an Australian billionaire has announced plans to build a replica.
Clive Palmer, who made a fortune in real estate before becoming a mining magnate, says he has agreed a deal with a Chinese shipbuilding company to construct the Titanic II, based on the original ship’s design.
“It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems,” Palmer said in a statement.
“Titanic II will sail in the northern hemisphere and her maiden voyage from England to North America is scheduled for late 2016. We have invited the Chinese navy to escort Titanic II on its maiden voyage to New York.”
An historical research team is already involved in the project’s design and Palmer says the new ship will have the same dimensions as the Titanic, with 840 rooms and nine decks.
However, the ship will be welded instead of riveted (as per the original Titanic) and will feature a bulbous bow for greater fuel efficiency. It will also have an enlarged rudder and bow thrusters for increased maneuverability.
“Titanic II will be the ultimate in comfort and luxury with on-board gymnasiums and swimming pools, libraries, high class restaurants and luxury cabins,” he said
The new ship is a tribute to the people who worked on the original Titanic, according to Palmer.
Alongside his Titanic announcement, Palmer has also revealed that he plans to run for Australia’s federal parliament and will seek selection with the Liberal National Party.
His Titanic plan has raised a few eyebrows on Twitter:
