Titian masterpiece sells for record-breaking $16.8m at auction

The 450-year-old Renaissance work, which had not been seen before the run-up to the auction for 30 years, has broken the record for the artist’s work at auction.

A PAINTING BY Renaissance master Titian has sold for $16.9m (€12.4m) in New York, setting a new auction record for his work.

A Sacra Conversazione: Madonna and Child, painted around 1560 at the height of the artist’s career, has changed hands just six times during its lifetime and has not been seen publicly for 30 years, according to the BBC.

The painting was bought by a European telephone bidder during an auction at Sotheby’s and beat the previous record for a work by Titian, which stood at $11.9m (€8.74m) and was paid at Christie’s in London in December 1991 for Venus and Adonis.

The painting was recent exhibited ahead of the auction in Paris, London and Amsterdam.
