GOOGLE HAS RELEASED its annual ‘Zeitgeist’, a look through the most popular searches on the web in 2010.
The results show what we’ve always known about Irish people: We like to talk. A lot. To anybody.
Consumption of media, including email, video chat and social networking, is on the rise – but the search growing fastest in popularity was for Chatroulette: a website that randomly connects users with complete strangers around the world for a one-on-one video chat. In fact, Chatroulette is the top search globally, which is something Google puts down to the “thrill-seeking and spontaneous nature” of the website.
Back in Ireland, Bieber fever has well and truly spread with the popster showing up high in searches for people, entertainment and music. The Eurovison has also held its ground, losing the top spot for music searches only to rappers Cee Lo Green and Eminem.
In sport, the Galway Races and Grand National came in first, followed by Wayne Rooney (although it’s not clear if this was because of his activity on or off the pitch).
The overall all winner for Irish audiences however is the indomitable Facebook, followed closely by YouTube and hotmail.
