Trapped in the closet? Bertie's wardrobe malfunction

A new ad for the News of the World leaves you rubbing your eyes: is that Bertie Ahern in a cupboard?!

Updated 18:26, October 4

ONE OF THE country’s most recognised politicians has shown up in a place few would have expected to see him: trapped in a kitchen cupboard.

In a new TV ad premiered this evening, Bertie Ahern – who spent 11 years as Taoiseach, and remains a TD – is seen hiding in a press in a kitchen, along with a number of his fellow contributors to the News of the World newspaper, for which Ahern writes a weekly sports column.

Other faces in the ad include crime correspondent Paul Williams, beauty writer Claudine Keane, and showbiz reporter Eoin Murphy.

The TV appearance is an unusually-timed one, given that just last month the three-term ‘Teflon Taoiseach’ admitted he had considered running for President – and distanced himself from any responsibility for Ireland’s financial collapse.

Unsurprisingly, the ad is picking up quite a deal of reaction online, and has even been discussed by the Wall Street Journal – so here’s a pick of our favourite comments.

What do you think of the ad – is it fitting of a presidential candidate, a bit of harmless fun, or a sign that politicians in Ireland aren’t to be taken seriously? Let us know in the comments below.
