Here's the story with that 'tricolour dildo' that's doing the rounds on Twitter

Potentially NSFW.

WITH THE WEEKEND that’s in it, there’s a whole load of 1916-themed memorabilia floating around.

Perhaps the most eyecatching tribute yet? This tricolour dildo.

The sex toy, which is available for purchase from online adult store Sex Siopa, is described as “soft and flexible” and has elicted quite a reaction on Twitter.

It has also inspired some rather terrific puns.

So, what’s the story with it?

Well, there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Shawna Scott of Sex Siopa explains on her website that the dildo is not simply about commemorating the Easter Rising, but about starting a conversation about Repeal The 8th and raising money for Abortion Rights Campaign.

There has been much talk and debate about how best to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising and who should or shouldn’t be allowed to participate in these commemorations. When we look back on our history, we also need to take the time to reflect where we currently are as a country and what kind of challenges we face in creating the Ireland we want to see in the future.
I chose to commemorate 1916 the only way I know how…with an Irish flag dildo specially custom made for Sex Siopa by our friends at BS Atelier. Till the end of 2016, €5 from each sale will be donated to the Abortion Rights Campaign.
The future I want to see for Ireland is one in which the women of this country are trusted to make informed healthcare decisions for themselves, and our doctors are protected under the law. If you trust women, the 8th Amendment needs to be repealed.

So, just how many have been sold? Shawna Scott tells DailyEdge.ie that she has sold “a handful,” but that she expects a bump in sales at the end of the month when everyone has been paid.

Furthermore, she has described the response to the product as “phenomenal”.

Apart from one or two unsavoury comments, everyone has been so positive about it. I’ve even been contacted by an international broadsheet who are interested in covering it as well.

She tells DailyEdge.ie that, regardless of how many she actually sells, she’s pleased to be raising awareness of an issue of such grave importance to Irish women.

I’m delighted, because even if I don’t sell loads, it’s helping to get the message out there about an issue that’s incredibly important to Irish women, and one that we collectively need to reflect on in this centenary year.

So now.
