OVER THE PAST 12 months – and beyond – Americans have got quite used to their new President bragging about some seriously ridiculous things.
Yesterday, at a press conference, Trump was asked whether he could be more civil in his dealings as President, and his response… well, was just pure Trumpian:
It was your standard press conference answer: talk about what college you went to and then claim you’re really smart:
I went to an Ivy League college. I was a nice student. I did very well. I’m a very intelligent person… I think the press creates a different image of Donald Trump than the real person.
Such a distilled moment of hubris was always going to be jumped on by commentators, and overnight everyone went in:
1. It’s hardly a subtle approach to being elitist
2. For a brief moment, Trump became Fredo from The Godfather

3. It’s not exactly a good look for a President
4. In fact, the statement comes across as proving the exact opposite point he was trying to make
5. People have been delving into his past for clues
6. And comparing samples for evidence
7. Imagining Trump’s discussion with the Greek Gods, and whether he misunderstood the question
8. Homer’s “I am so smrt” line was everywhere
9. Hillary’s supporters were quick to point out that she went to Yale
10. You couldn’t really imagine the great thinkers of history coming out with such a brash one-liner
Oscar Wilde: “I have nothing to declare but… the fact that I’m a very intelligent person!”
11. This was the reaction, probably, in Democrat HQ
12. It hardly plays up to his anti-elitist shtick which bizarrely caught on given he’s a multi-millionaire property tycoon
13. It’s the equivalent of still bragging about your Leaving Cert results in your 20s
14. People aren’t even that impressed
15. A line that could go down in the pantheon of ridiculous White House statements
Until next time.
