These sounds might upset you

Listen to some of the most horrible sounds in the world… with a reward at the end.

LOOK, THIS ISN’T going to be pleasant for any of us, but stick with it and we promise there are some rewards at the end.

A new scientific study has identified some of the most horrifyingly unpleasant sounds known to man, and we bring them to you here today.

The Newcastle University/UCL  study published by the Journal of Neuroscience asked 13 volunteers to rate the pleasantness of 74 different sounds, and monitored their brain responses. The researchers found that heightened activity between the emotional and auditory parts of the brain determine what sounds we determine to be unpleasant.

Frequency ranges also play a role.

The most unpleasant sounds aren’t really that surprising, but they are pretty horrifying. They include:

  • A baby crying (or two babies crying):

  • An anglegrinder:

And here’s the top three:

3. Chalk on a blackboard:

2. Fork on a glass.

1. Knife on a glass bottle.

Now, if you’ll just pick up your teeth and clean up that little bit of puke, we think you deserve a treat.

Here are some of the most pleasant sounds, according to the researchers:

  • A baby laughing:

And here, for good measure, is a picture of a dog enjoying some tunes:
