US presidential hopeful distances himself from a slogan written by a gay poet
A POTENTIAL US Republican presidential candidate has distanced himself from his own campaign slogan after he was informed that it was written by a gay poet.
Rick Santorum’s homepage features the slogan “Fighting to make America America again”. The motto is a line from a Langston Hughes poem. Hughes is a respected American poet who also happens to be gay. The trouble is, Santorum is not known for his pro-gay sentiments.
When the former senator was approached and asked about his slogan and its origins he moved to distance himself from the motto, claiming “I had nothing to do with it”. Santorum says he wasn’t informed of the slogan’s origins and that he’s “not a big poetry guy”.
