These amazing Uterus Prime jumpers have gone on sale ahead of the March for Choice

“Bodily autonomy is the right of all sentient beings.”

THERE WERE LOTS of great, creative signs at last year’s March For Choice, but one in particular captured attention on the day: A neon yellow banner featuring ‘Uterus Prime’.

The clever subversion of the familiar Optimus Prime logo from Transformers is the brainchild of Dublin-based architect Rae Moore.

She told DailyEdge.ie how she came up with the idea of creating a ‘female hero’, in the vein of Wonder Woman and Rey from Star Wars:

I wanted to use the image of a uterus, but also subvert that image and create new meaning… Optimus Prime’s iconic graphic logo came to mind. It was perfect. Borrowing something very male and giving it new meaning.
Anyone who is familiar with Transformers would understand the message from him instantly – ‘Freedom is the right of all sentient beings’ – but in the instance of Uterus Prime, bodily autonomy is the right of all sentient beings.

“I was kind of amazed by people’s reactions on the streets and online,” said Moore. “I think we’re all starved for female heroes and strong female imagery.”

She said “peer pressure” lead her to making jumpers and t-shirts featuring the design, which sold out almost instantly in December.

Ahead of this year’s March for Choice on September 30, she’s decided to make some more, with all proceeds once again going to the Abortion Rights Campaign.

“There it was, an opportunity to do something, to raise money and awareness – I had to make it happen,” she said.

The Eighth Amendment will be repealed, I don’t doubt it. If this is something you believe in, then take action. Do something. Get involved. It’s the only way to create change.

You can nab a Uterus Prime jumper for €35 here - if you’d like, you can collect it at the Garden of Remembrance on the morning of the March for Choice.
