Goop to refund customers who bought the company's controversial vaginal eggs

Gwyneth Paltrow established Goop in 2008.

IF VAGINAL EGGS are one of the first things that comes to mind when you think of Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle company, Goop, you’re not alone.

The website, which seeks to promote health and wellness, sells a Jade Egg, a Rose Quartz Egg and a tincture called Inner Judge Flower Essence Blend – products which did much to raise scorn among cynics in recent times.

Well, it turns out those cynics may well have had the last laugh.

According to Bloomberg, Goop advertised that the three products would balance hormones, regulate menstrual cycles and improve bladder control – claims which have been disputed, and included in a lawsuit against the company.

And this week it has been confirmed that Goop has agreed to stop making the aforementioned claims, pay a $145,000 settlement and refund customers who bought any of the three products, which range in price from $22 to $66, between January and August last year.

Highlighting the company’s position in the wake of the settlement, Goop’s CFO, Erica Moore stated:

Goop provides a forum for practitioners to present their views and experiences with various products like the Jade Egg. The law, though, sometimes views statements like this as advertising claims, which are subject to various legal requirements.

Santa Clara DA, Jeff Rosen, also made his position on the matter clear.

The health and money of Santa Clara County residents should never be put at risk by misleading advertising. We will vigilantly protect consumers against companies that promise health benefits without the support of good science.

The eggs are still available on the site, but their desciptions have been amended accordingly.
