The circus, which is taking place in Blackpool, is situated just a few minutes away from where the elephant was filmed.

The video shows the keeper trying his best to control and calm the animal with pedestrians looking on bemused at the unfolding scene.

A second circus employee then arrives to assist the keeper in capturing the elephant.

The two men eventually get the elephant out of the car park. The runaway was eventually stopped at traffic lights and escorted back to the circus.

Gardai were called to the scene by a passing motorist. Speaking to TheJournal.ie, a  spokesperson said that an incident took place at approximately 4.50pm.
