Warner Bros begin renting movies digitally on Facebook
WARNER BROS is launching a digital movie rental service on Facebook from today – starting with blockbuster The Dark Knight.
The studio says it is the first to offer movies directly on the social networking site, allowing users to access the film’s official Facebook page and click a “watch” or “rent” icon.
Users will be able to play, pause and rewind the movie – just as with a normal rental – for 48 hours. It will cost $3 or 30 Facebook credits, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people,” Cnet News quotes Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros Digital Distribution, as saying. “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”
The studio has described the rental service as a “test”. It is not yet available to users in Ireland.
