Watch it: Friday at the movies
EVERY FRIDAY AFTERNOON, TheJournal.ie presents an award-winning short film for you to enjoy as you ease into the weekend.
This week: Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty
Written and starring Kathleen O’Rourke and directed by Nicky Phelan, Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty is the superb Oscar-nominated short animation from the hugely successful Brown Bag stable. The seemingly limitless talents at Brown Bag previously created such gems as Give Up Yer Aul Sins, also Oscar-nominated, and various television shows.
In this six-minute short, Granny O’Grimm tells her own version of the story Sleeping Beauty to her increasingly terrified granddaughter. The character of Granny O’Grimm was first created by Kathleen O’Rourke as a sketch in her stage show and was then adapted for this animated film where it reached its full potential. Funded by the Irish Film Board, RTE and the Arts Council the film has been a huge festival hit around the world.
