Watch: James Cameron gears up for new marine exploration project

Specially-designed submarine has carried out a successful unmanned test dive.

A SPECIALLY-DESIGNED submarine which Titanic director James Cameron plans to use to take him to the Earth’s deepest point has carried out a successful unmanned test dive.

Cameron and his team intend to spend about six hours exploring and filming during their seven-mile-deep dive of the Mariana Trench.

The trench, located about 200 miles south-west of the Pacific island Guam, is the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean and is believed to be the deepest location on Earth.

Speaking to National Geographic, Cameron said that the underlying point of the mission is to “push back the boundaries of the known world”.

He says that little is known about the species that live in the area he plans to explore with his team aboard the Deep Challenger submarine. Their dive is expected to go ahead this weekend, provided conditions are favourable:
