A Jetlev user takes in the view at 28 feet up YouTube

Watch: The future is here... and it's jetpack-shaped

The water-powered flight suit lets users soar up to 28 feet – but is “not practical for commuting”, its makers warn.

A DREAM HAS finally come true for a generation of James Bond fans after a US firm launched a commercially-produced jetpack.

Wearing the device on their back, users can fly up to 28ft – the height of a three-storey house – above the surface of any sea or lake as they are lifted on powerful jets of water. Called the Jetlev 200, the manufacturer’s website trumpets its “inherent stability”, “intuitive controls” and “high thrust-to-weight ratio”.

Novices can learn to fly in as little as six minutes, the makers add, with more advanced jetpackers able to hover and turn donuts in the air. However, the contraption has one drawback – you have to be tethered to ground level at all times with a long hose. And even if your route to work happens to lie along a handy canal, Jetlev Technologies warn their invention is “not practical for commuting and should primarily be used for recreation.”

Currently, a new Jetlev 200 will set you back a cool $99,500, or around €69,000. However a Florida firm, Jetpack Adventures, is offering one and a half hours of airborne antics for a just $249 (€170).
