Women have responded to Jamelia's body shaming comments with empowering selfies

#WeAreTheThey has gone down a storm on Twitter.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, Jamelia came under fire for comments she made regarding overweight women.

During an appearance on Loose Women, the singer stated that shops should not sell clothes over size 20 as it facilitates the “unhealthy lifestyle” of overweight women.

A plus size blogger @Debzjs called on women below size 6 and above size 20 to share photos of themselves under the hashtag #WeAreTheThey.

Scores of men and women responded to her call and shared empowering photos of themselves

The campaign has been warmly received and hailed as “inspiring”.

For her part, Jamelia has backtracked on her comments. In a Facebook status posted on Wednesday, the singer said that her comments were misunderstood.

First of all…contrary to today’s headlines, At NO POINT during yesterday’s episode of Loose Women did I say that I did not want plus size clothing available on the high street…at NO POINT did I say I wanted overweight people to feel uncomfortable about shopping for clothes…at NO POINT did I suggest anyone needs to slim down or change their appearance to fit what is available on the high street.

Whatever you say, Jamelia.
