EL CELLER DE Can Rosa in Girona, Spain has topped the annual list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, announced today.
The fancy, fancy restaurants on the list are celebrated for their lavish, cutting-edge and often downright weird dishes – we had a look through the menus and picked out some of the strangest concoctions.
1. Fermented plums and wild beach roses
Where: Noma, Copenhagen (#3 on the list)
It’s served on a sheet of muslin cloth, looks slightly placenta-like, and contains ‘wild beach roses’. Hmm.
2. Edible stones
Where: Mugaritz, San Sebastián, Spain (#6)
Surprise! The ‘stones’ are just potatoes rolled in grey stuff.
3. Deep-fried moss and pine foam
Where: Noma, Copenhagen (again)
It’s not a floral arrangement for the centre of the table, it’s your dinner! Yay?
4. Meat Fruit
Where: Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, London (#7)
Quite literally, ‘fruit’ made out of meat. What else would you expect from Heston?
5. Aged pigeon, beetroot, olives and pickled wild rose
Where: The Ledbury, London (#20)
Pickled roses? Pigeon? You mean we can go down Stephen’s Green at lunch and make ourselves a meal from what we find?
6. Edible apple-flavoured balloon
Where: Alinea, Chicago (#26)
Hipster nonsense. *whispers* But we’d still give it a try.
7. Soup shots
Where: Aqua, Wolfsburg, Germany (#33)
Probably the most palatable of the bunch. Not exactly what springs to mind when you think of ‘shots’, but… OK?
