Wesley Snipes ordered to start three-year jail sentence

A judge has ordered the Hollywood actor to begin a jail sentence for ‘deliberately failing to file tax returns’.

ACTOR WESLEY SNIPES has been ordered to surrender himself to local police and begin serving a three-year sentence for tax-related crimes.

Snipes has been free on appeal since 2008, when he was found guilty of deliberately failing to file tax returns for 1999, 2000 and 2001. He was acquitted of the more serious charges of fraud and conspiracy which he faced.

Florida Judge William Terrell Hodges wrote:

The defendant Snipes had a fair trial; he has had a full, fair and thorough review of his conviction and sentence. The time has come for the judgement to be enforced.

The Associated Press reports that Snipes’ defence attorney Daniel Meachum said that he planned to appeal at the US Supreme Court.

The sentence Snipes received is the maximum allowable for such offences.
