CORK’S FIRST WETHERSPOON’S pub, The Linen Weaver, has just opened and it’s already making headlines.
Last night, Cork’s Red FM posted an image showing that drinks in The Linen Weaver are notably more expensive than drinks in The Three Tun Tavern, a Wetherspoon’s branch in Dun Laoghaire.
For example, pints of Staropramen cost €3.95 in The Linen Weaver compared to just €2.95 in The Three Tun Tavern.
And Beamish (which is brewed in Cork!) is €1 more expensive than in Dublin.
So what’s the deal? Are Corkonians getting ripped off?
Not quite.
This morning, Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon conceded that The Linen Weaver was more expensive than Wetherspoon’s branches in Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire,
Speaking to Red FM’s Neil Prendeville, however, he stated that the prices were in line with the prices in recently opened branches in Swords and Blanchardstown.
He confirmed that it was Wetherspoon’s intention to align prices across all branches in the Republic meaning that prices in Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire would increase over time… and those €2.50 pints would become a thing of the past.
The likelihood is that those prices will increase in due course.
Furthermore, he confirmed that the price differential was not related to the cost of opening a business in Cork as many had speculated.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon told DailyEdge.ie: “Our prices in Cork are in line with those at our two recent openings in Swords and Blanchardstown. Prices are lower in our Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire pubs.
“Our prices are listed on our menus for our customers to see.”
When we opened our first pubs in the Republic of Ireland we said that prices were likely to rise at new pubs and this is the case. We feel our prices are fair and competitive.
