THE YEAR WAS 2000.
B*Witched were all the rage and girls were still swooning over Boyzone. But there was something missing from the Irish musical landscape: a female hip-hop group.
Step right up, Buffalo G.
Buffalo G were a duo comprised of teenagers Naomi Lynch, sister of Boyzone’s Shane Lynch and B*Witched’s Edel and Keavy Lynch, and Olive Tucker. They released a single We’re Really Saying Something, a cover of the Velvelettes/Bananarama song of the same name.
Only this one contained hardcore rap verses like…
Two two girls from Dublin/Stirrin’ around were troublin’/Sugar and spice is always nice/ But that’s not us we’re bubblin’
The song charted inside the top 20 and was a big deal for children of a certain age. (Myself included.)
But whatever happened to the pair?
Well, Naomi Lynch is now known as Naomi French and works as a “specialist fire and pyro performer”.
And, er, she’s not messing.
For her part, Olive Tucker now works as a colourist with House of Colour and has been featured in the likes of Image, Irish Independent and Xposé.
G’WAN THE GALS.
