The author wrote in a blog post that he missed the New Year’s Eve deadline for The Winds of Winter to come out before the show in April, so you’ll be watching the TV show for information instead of the usual book before show.

He wrote

You’re disappointed, and you’re not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed… but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me.
