Grandmother chases off purse thief with mop and bucket

Wiping the floor with her enemies.

WELL, THAT’S ONE way to scare off a thief. Yvonne Carey from Merseyside chased after a man who stole 200 from her purse, with a mop and bucket.

The man walked into the Our Lady Queen of Peace social club she manages and swiped the cash from her handbag behind the bar. The 58-year-old was planning to change it to dollars ahead of a family trip to Orlando.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the 58-year-old said:

We have been saving for seven years. I am going with my son, and the grandchildren. I know I am not getting my £200, but at least he did not steal the money from a pensioner. And I am still going to Orlando.

Yvonne, who has volunteered at the social club for 25 years, said the mop and bucket were her only option.

I had the mop and bucket in my hand when I saw him take the money. I yelled at him, then chased him to the door. I suppose he could have had a knife or anything.

The grandmother’s valiant efforts were caught on CCTV, but the man was too quick for her and took off down the street.

She told the Daily Mail that perhaps her cleaning gear wasn’t the best choice of defence, saying “Maybe if I’d have chucked the mop and bucket away I’d have caught up with him.”
