Heartwarming film documents bond between disabled boy and his three-legged dog
OWEN HOPKINS IS eight years old, and has a rare and painful medical condition. He also has a three legged best friend, a dog named Haatchi, who has helped him overcome his fears.
His amazing story has been documented in the most moving of short films. At the beginning, we’re introduced to a giggling Owen and his canine BFF, Haatchi.
Owen’s parents talk about his disease and what life’s like for their son, saying “He’s used to living with pain all his life.”
Owen uses drawings to tell the story of how Haatchi, who suffered cruel treatment by previous owners, came to live with him. He tells us that Haatchi looks after him, and is special.
Owen enjoys the positive attention that Haatchi gets from people when they’re out for walks, and how the focus is now on his dog and no longer on his wheelchair.
The pair are special guests at Crufts 2013, where they are nominated for a Friends for Life award. Owen’s parents stand proudly behind him.
Owen is lost for words when asked how much it means to him to be in the final of Friends for Life.
Owen and Haatchi win the final of the Friends for Life competition. Owen is told he is an “Absolute super star, and so is Haatchi”.
